How Does it Work?

The magnetic pulses induce an electrical current in the brain, stimulating the nerve
cells, increasing the brain activity to normal levels.
Through a treatment coil, the TMS Therapy system generates highly concentrated, magnetic fields which are rapidly switched on and off.  These magnetic fields do not directly affect the whole brain, they only reach a few centimeters into the brain, directly beneath the treatment coil.

The treatment coil is applied to the head above the left pre-frontal cortex.  This part of the brain is involved in mood regulation and therefore, is the location where the magnetic fields are focused.  As these magnetic fields move into the brain, they produce very small electrical current.  These electrical currents activate cells within the brain which are thought to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine to treat depression. The magnetic pulses induce an electrical current in the brain, stimulating the nerve cells, increasing the brain activity to normal levels.

One of the benefits of TMS therapy is that it may improve the symptoms of some psychiatric conditions.  It is important to note that like in any medical treatment some patients may see positive results immediately others make take a little longer to see results and some may not see any results from TMS therapy.

The 2 mainframe units contain elements which are used to store electrical energy. The release of this electrical energy is controlled inside of the mainframe units. The User Interface screen allows the clinician to adjust the treatment settings to a protocol tailored to you.

Magstim User Interface and Mainframe
The electrical current passes from the capacitors into the coil and the moving electrical charge induces a magnetic field at the coil face.  This magnetic field is capable of inducing electrical changes in the brain and causes nerves to activate.

Magstim Air Film Coil
*Your treater will show you the equipment prior to use so that you are familiar with the look of the equipment and the sound that the equipment makes in use.
*Always ask your treater if you have any questions
*Your TMS Practitioner can help you understand what's involved during treatment

Your doctor will place a cap on your head and take a couple of measurements of your head in order to determine the treatment site. The treatment site will be marked on the cap and will be used in follow up sessions to ensure that the correct site is stimulated in each treatment session.

Measuring for treatment location
*Each patient's measurements are taken to locate the site of treatment
*The blue coil will be placed on your head and your doctor will determine your optimal treatment level.  This optimum treatment is based on what is known as your motor threshold and is determined by stimulating your brain and watching for a muscle twitch in your right hand. Once your optimum treatment level has been determined,  your doctor will commence the treatment.
*A typical treatment session may last between 20 to 40 minutes
*Once your treatment session is complete, you are free to return to your normal routine.

Is TMS covered by Insurance?

TMS treatment may or may not be covered by your insurance.  We strongly recommend calling your insurance carrier to make sure that TMS treatment is cover under your insurance plan.

Insurances that may or may not cover TMS:  Please be advised that even if you see your insurance name here that does not mean they will cover for treatment.  Every insurance has their own policies and guidelines.  Every policy is different therefore make sure to speak with your insurance representative.

TMS is not a medication. It is a safe, highly effective, office-based treatment for adults suffering with major depressive disorder who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode. TMS uses magnetic stimulation of the left pre-frontal cortex to activate brain cells, releasing neurotransmitters to restore electro-chemical balance, relieving the symptoms of depression and improving mood.
