TMS is not a medication. It is a safe, highly effective, office-based treatment for adults suffering with major depressive disorder who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode. TMS uses magnetic stimulation of the left pre-frontal cortex to activate brain cells, releasing neurotransmitters to restore electro-chemical balance, relieving the symptoms of depression and improving mood.

HOW DOES IT WORKS?

Through a treatment coil, the TMS Therapy system generates highly concentrated, magnetic fields which are rapidly switched on and off.  These magnetic fields do not directly affect the whole brain, they only reach a few centimeters into the brain, directly beneath the treatment coil.

The treatment coil is applied to the head above the left pre-frontal cortex.  This part of the brain is involved with mood regulation and therefore, is the location where the magnetic fields are focused.  As these magnetic fields move into the brain, they produce very small electrical current.  These electrical currents activate cells within the brain which are thought to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine to treat depression.

One of the benefits of TMS therapy is that it may improve the symptoms of some psychiatric conditions.  It is important to note that like in any medical treatment some patients may see positive results immediately others make take a little longer to see results and some may not see any results from TMS therapy.
